There are a lot of books to be found in the paintings of Tjebbe Beekman, just as there are a lot of paintings in his recently published book. Beekman Paintings gives insight in the practice of the Amsterdam based painter over the last 20 years. Even though there has been a stylistic shift in recent years and a new focus on art history, the book also enables to find continuity in the work. Often, as a viewer you find yourself in a claustrophobic space (in the corner of a room, against a wall) but then, once you tune in to the situation, and get accustomed, there are many layers to be found, color play and changing perspectives. Painting, in Beekman’s case, seems a way of digging into the ambivalence of images, and enjoying that. There are several paintings made of studio’s, which brings in the presence of other artists. A room turns into a mental space, and a way of looking.
